What to do when waiting 2 yrs for autism diagnosis UK

What to do when waiting approximately 2 years for an autism diagnosis in the UK

By now you have convinced someone that you are a bit "not normal" when it comes to social engagements. That is you have marked deficiencies in:
  1. Social Imagination - you cannot tell what someone will do next.
  2. Social Interaction -
  3. Social Communication - You are a little quite rude

The Kindness of Strangers

Well, now the phrase having to rely on the kindness of stranger seems very apt. From now on you will have to rely on the kindness of strangers, because if you a man with Aspergers you may only have you or a friend to get on with. If you think that someone with Aspergers should not be able to be humourous; ask Dan Akroyd <<Aspergian comedian.

So here is my list of amazing things to do whilst you are waiting for an autism assessment in the UK. I will write somewhere else how to go about getting an Autism assessment somewhere else.

Approaching child social services is still applicable if you have a child waiting for an autism assessment. Let me know if you want a list for a little one.

Autism in waiting todo list

  1. Google and join an autism forum online and or public group in your area. I'm a bit spikey so I have joined the Forum online forum.autism.org.uk.
  2. Ask your doctor to register you for an ADHD test, the results can take approx 6 months. But the help you need may arrive sooner than that with an ASD report. There is a high probability that you will also have ADHD.
  3. Ask your doctor or self-refer yourself for counselling, it takes a while or forever. So best get started. There will be times when you may wish to talk to someone other than your doctor. Doctors have very little time.
  4. Ask adult social services to come and see you. This is tricky. They technically have to see you but legally this can also be forever. Yes, this is very weird. There is no legal time actual time limit for them to come and see you. even if you are priority one. My current wait is 8 months.
  5. Apply for the PIP. The personal independence payment pays you a little extra money if you are working or not.
  6. If you are working, apply for disability working tax credits.
  7. Lastly, I have two recommendations for books, which could help you figure some things out with your social interactions.
    1. Stephen Covey, 7 habits of effective families
    2. Dale Carnegie, How to win friends and influence people.

I keep getting these terrible headaches. How do I stop them?

For a while, I suffered from persistent, recurrent headaches that only taking Nurofen could shift. I found my headaches came down to a few things. Eyestrain Lack of rest, especially the eyes, Dirty glasses Lighting coming from behind the tv/monitor, a bit like an eclipse The brain Lack of water, drink water without crap in it. Crap = flavours, additives etc. Caffeine withdrawal, caffeine pills Alcohol dries out the brain, drink more water The body Poor posture, sit upright adjust your keyboard monitor, seat properly, and foot rest Take regular breaks, from working Get the right amount of sleep for you. Varies between 6 - 10 hours because of age, gender, and recent activity It took me months to clear all the crap out of the system. The biggest threat to my brain was my favourite fizzy orange drink. When I really had a look at the back I was surprised to see so many e numbers it made my head spin. I now don’t use Nurofen or g...

Stop being derailed

How I keep on track, and not loose cool thoughts as they happen. You need. An extra price of paper and a writing tool. Label it with the date and the title, 'side track'. Place it to the side of your main work.    Why? I often loose focus. My mind wanders and wants to explore new and fresh ideas. This is an amazing asset. To think of new ideas easily and freely.  Yet this can eat into your productivity. Stops you accomplishing your main goals. And may cause unescesary stress.  Yet, all you I need is a piece of paper to keep myself back on track. When I start work I often have those 'aha moments. But this creates a conflict.  I want to complete my main task. And stay on track. I know completing the work I set out to do is the best way to move ahead. But I also want to explore that new idea. Who knows where it may lead, right? How? I take the new thought and note it separately. I put this on my sidetrack. I place shopping, errands, thoughts, projects, social media...

Structuring Written content for dyslexics

How can you easily structure any written content Did you know W. B. Yeats is one of the most famous poets of all time, winning the  Nobel Prize for literature in 1923 , but few people know about his personal struggle with dyslexia. I want to continue telling you about my personal struggle and how I achieving success with dyslexia. My daughter at 7 was and still is a prolific reader. And she reads books above her age group. Well she has an advanced vocabulary too, partly because of this and also she liked to talk "at" adults. She is dyslexic. I was struggling with her daughter to help her complete her homework about a year ago. It was to complete a nocturnal animals report. She had read 6 books and could tell me all about the animals in detail. But she did not know where to start. It seems strange to me that kids are not shown how to plan and make the homework. And of course without structure, she began to fail. Homework When I brough...
